This is an idea for a new Photo visibility option (or possibly a couple new ones) to allow some members to share some pics more widely than just to their friends.

The current visibility options and their effects

Currently there are 4 visibility options:

  • Public: every certified member can see these with no action required.
  • Friends: it requires a friend request to be sent and approved before they can see these.
  • Private: the owner can grant private access to anybody they want on the site, but has some side effects.
    • It notifies the recipient when you've unlocked your private photos, and maybe you don't want to make it so apparent.
    • If they are also your friend, it subscribes them to notifications when you upload new private photos, and maybe you don't want that.
  • Circle: the photo is visible to a wide cohort of strangers that you're not necessarily friends with, who had been curated by a community of people and not yourself.

This new visibility option would be like "Private" and "Circle" but would allow users to curate their own group of "strangers I like" and share pictures widely with them.

The new visibility option(s)

The basic proposed new option is:

People I Like: my Friends and any profile I have clicked "Like" on.

Users could tag a new photo upload to be "People I Like" and make it available on the Site Gallery as usual. The effects of this visibility would be:

  • For people on their Friends list:
    • They would receive the usual "your friend shared a new photo!" notification, as it does when you uploaded any new photo that your friends can see.
    • Your friends would see it on the Site Gallery and your profile page.
  • For people that the owner has "Liked" (and who are not friends):
    • Your new photo would be visible on the Site Gallery and your profile page, the same as a "Public" photo would.
    • No notification goes to the user, it's just as if you shared a Public photo but you had whitelisted who you care to let see by Liking their profile page.

Note: people you like would be notified when you "Liked" their page, or they can see their list of who likes them. But basically, the "Like" button would allow users to curate their own circle of wider audience than their friends list, which requires very little contact between the two parties, in order to say: you're my kind of people, you can see more of my 'public' content that I like reciprocity on.

Some additional visibility options might be:

  • "Friends + People who Like me": this could be an interesting vehicle for consent. Imagine you'd like to share your explicit pics on Public, but really want people to opt-in to see it. They can simply "Like" your profile page, and your additional 'public' pics are visible as if they were on Public.
    • Since these pics are so nearly Public, maybe the Gallery page can indicate "Soandso has another 20 pictures you can see if you Like their page."
    • An inspiration for this idea was: on Mastodon I came across a profile who said, "I post nudes on followers-only, but my follows are open (no approval needed)". It was an extra level of consent: anybody could follow this profile and then see the nudes they share, but then the nudes were only going to these people who expressly wanted it, not being spread publicly across the Fediverse where it could land on random peoples timelines.

User Stories

  1. Alice discovers Bob's profile on nonshy for the first time (they are not friends or 'liked').
    • Bob shares 5 pictures on public, 2 on "people who Like me" and some more on friends-only or private.
    • Alice only sees Bob's 5 public pictures, but a notice at the top of the page reads "Bob has another 2 pictures you can see if you Like their page."
    • If Alice "Likes" Bob's page, now she sees 7 photos on his gallery. She will also see Bob's future "people who Like me" posts on the site gallery when he uploads more.
